Cumulated power installed in photovoltaics in Poland

According to the data of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the installed power in photovoltaics at the end of 2020 was 3,935.74 MW. This means an increase of 2,463 MW year on year. That is, the installed power in photovoltaics increased by 200% during the year. The market structure remains unchanged - 75% are micro-installations, and PV farms 21%. However, according to IEO forecasts, a change in the market structure will start from this year and solar farms will constitute an increasing percentage of the total installed power.

The full statistics of power installed in photovoltaic sources includes:

  • Photovoltaic micro installations - up to 50 kW, whose total power at the end of 2020 was 2973,742 MW;
  • Small photovoltaic installations - with a power from 50 kW to 500 kW, whose total power at the end of 2020 was 67.39 MW and auto consumer installations (big companies which produce electricity for their own needs), whose total power at the end of 2020 was 124 MW.
  • PV installations with a power above 500 kW, which were largely created as part of the system of certificates of origin - IEO estimates that the power of these installations is about 75 MW;
  • PV installations, which were built as part of the auction support system, at the end of 2020 had a total view of approx. 700 MW- most of them are installations with a power close to 1 MW.

The turnover on the photovoltaic market in 2020

IEO summarized the results achieved in terms of the total trade turnover of the industry of 2020 in the table below. The largest contribution to the trade turnover was made by the PV micro-installation segment, driven by subsidies from the My Current program. They contributed to the total trade turnover of the industry nearly PLN 8.4 billion, which accounted for approximately 80% of all turnover on the photovoltaic market in 2020. The second largest segment of photovoltaic farms (mainly those up to 1 MW) was ranked second in terms of installed power in Poland. In 2020, the farm segment generated a trade turnover of approximately PLN 1.5 billion. Total PV industry generated a trade turnover of 10,5 billion PLN.

Forecasts of installed power in PV [MW] up to 2025

According to IEO, in 2021, the development of photovoltaics in Poland will continue to maintain its dynamics. IEO estimates that in 2021 we can see an increase in new photovoltaic PV at the level of 2 GW. In 2021, new photovoltaic powers will be distributed between prosumers (driven mainly by the My Current program, which will be continued from mid-2021 by the Ministry of Climate) and PV farms - 2021 is the time for the implementation of investments under the 2018 auction (which had an extended completion date due to COVID-19) and the 2019 auction. According to the IEO, at the end of 2021, almost 6 GW of photovoltaic installations may already operate in Poland.

In 2022 and 2023 the share of PV farms in the total installed power will be equal to the share of micro-installations. The PV market will change from the current prosumer character to sustainable between professional PV power plants and prosumers. In 2023, the PV power will reach 8 GW. In 2025, however, the total installed power can reach even 15 GW.
